I would use the rounded en...Careful with the knife. I would use the rounded end of my brush, it is easier to use. Pick the size you want and try it. Don't be upset with the color. Remember Gaugain's landscapes freed the painter from painting everything as it appears in nature. I know what you are trying to achieve, but a little color up front will also give your painting depth and interest. The trees in the distance need to be muted, otherwise they will not look right.
